Unfortunately, insurance doesn’t cover much or cover anything at all for myofunctional therapy. Therefore, I do not take insurance but can provide a superbill if you would like to try to get reimbursed. Also, some clients need speech therapy following myofunctional therapy. They can save that coverage for the speech-language pathologist (SLP).
Once you determine myofunctional therapy is something you will benefit from, you will schedule a comprehensive exam. This includes photos, measurements and a severity assessment form. A treatment plan will be designed for your specific needs and you will take a kit home with you for your future sessions. Next, you will schedule your first session and we will start therapy! Each session is about 30 minutes, every 2-4 weeks depending on your therapy plan.
When you have a tongue-tie that causes impairment, the doctor will release the fibers that are anchoring the tongue to the floor of the mouth. This releases the tongue and allows the tongue to have a better range of motion and finally reach the roof of the mouth where it belongs.
A tongue-tie is tethered oral tissue (TOT) that anchors the tongue down and keeps it from reaching the roof of the mouth. Tongue-tie can be mild to severe depending on how much or little function the individual has. Symptoms from tongue-tie include headache, crowded/crooked teeth, digestive issues, acid reflux, constipation, head and neck tension, speech problems, gas/bloating, and many more.
A tongue thrust is a learned behavior that causes the tongue to push forward when swallowing. This is improper swallowing and can have the same symptoms as a tongue tie.
Mouth breathing means there is compensation and no Nitric Oxide being produced which causes a constant deprivation of oxygen.
Mouth breathing causes the tonsils to become enlarged because the tonsils are trying to filter the dry, dirty air. When a child is a mouth breather it causes them to develop incorrectly which leads to underdevelopment of the jaws and a constricted airway.
